Civil War Battlefield Relic Displays, Etc.

A partial list of available displays is below. There are several pages of items.

I am working on many new displays which will be posted as they are completed.

NEW: I've got a new area that lists the Civil War books I am offering. There's some incredible reference material here as well as absolutely fascinating reading. Click here to go to that page.

My Excavated Relics

My Civil War battlefield relic displays are made up of dug artifacts that have been dug on battlefields, campgrounds, skirmish areas, hospital areas, etc. To the best of my knowledge, none have been dug in protected areas, but rather on private property with the owner's permission. I primarily use a half dozen professional and amateur diggers in Virginia and Pennsylvania and one in Mississippi. As these diggers work an area, they bag their finds and label those bags with the area from which they were found. When they send me a shipment of finds, I sort them out, clean off any remaining dirt, identify the individual pieces, and create my displays. Each of my displays has a description of the included items and where they were found. All items are authentic and are guaranteed to have been excavated in the area from which the relic is described as having come. I do not sell individual relics - only displays I make from those relics. Those marked "generic" or "stock" are displays I create a half dozen or so at a time. If there is a picture, it is representative of those displays. NOTE: With a few exceptions, my diggers label their finds as to the general area rather than specific area. i.e. "Gettysburg" or "Corinth/Shiloh corridor" rather than a specific battle or skirmish.

"Dropped bullets" are those bullets that were dropped rather than being shot. A soldier may have dropped a bullet while attempting to load in the heat of battle; he may have been wounded and when he fell he lost his pouch of bullets; a cache of bullets may have been buried by one side or the other for later retrieval in a hasty retreat or advance, etc. Also, for my purposes, a shot bullet that was not damaged is considered a dropped bullet.

"Shot bullets" are just that. They are ones which have been shot. While many prefer the dropped bullets, I far prefer the shot ones if they are identifiable.

Each of my displays comes with an eBooklet that has details on the various areas my relics come from and a section describing the various bullets that were used.

Frames: Many of my pictures show the display in a frame. Because of the additional shipping costs and possibility of damage, I no longer ship my displays framed unless it is noted in the description. The background my relics are affixed to are laminated in a 10mil heavy Mylar. They are trimmed to fit in a standard 8.5" x 11" frame or a standard 5" x 7" frame. These frames can be obtained from WalMar and similar locations for $2.00 to $2.50 each for the least expensive wooden frames. They are also available at the "Dollar" stores, but I do not like the quality of those frames.

Wholesale Info: If you are a dealer, museum gift shop, antique/collectibles shop, etc. contact me about quantity purchases.

Custom Orders: I solicit custom orders. Charges are based upon the items going into the display and are subject to the items I have in stock or can locate.

Shipping Info: For displays I have on the shelf, I ship the Friday of the week payment is received. I create my displays on the weekend, so for any custom displays or standard displays I must create, they are shipped the Friday of the week after payment is received. I normally make all shipments on Friday. Shipments are made either via United Parcel Service or USPS.  My shipping charges are normally based upon the dollar amount of the order, but occasionally there is an additional charge for heavier items.

Foreign Shipping Info: Foreign buyers need to contact me for shipping charges. Often I can ship in a large USPS Global Priority flat rate envelope and the charge for that is $10. But, I can only get framed item in the flat rate envelope

Personalized Displays: My displays are all created one at a time. Most of them can be personalized at no additional charge. As an example, if you had an ancestor who fought at Shiloh or Petersburg and would like the headline and text customized to include a little information about that ancestor, there would be no additional charge providing all I have to do is to replace the pictured text and not re-design the entire display and providing I have enough relics from that area to produce the display. Just keep your text to about the same length as the text in the pictured display.

My relics are presented the way I receive them from my diggers with one exception. I use a toothbrush to brush away any loose material from the relic. Each of these displays are one-of-a-kind and subject to prior sale.

If you have a special interest in relics from a particular area, please email me at: cy@hotlinecy.com and let me know the area and I will see if I have any from there. Most of my relics are from around Gettysburg, Corinth, and Shiloh. I have smaller numbers of relics from many different sites in VA, as well as some other areas. Unfortunately, I have none from areas west of Louisiana. I have some 15,000 - 20,000 dug small relics that are bagged as to where they came from but I have not had time to make displays out of them yet. All of my items are used for displays. I do not sell individual relics.

Please bookmark this site because I am always putting together new displays from my current inventory of relics and new relics as I receive them. My displays are one-of-a-kind and when one is sold I attempt to make a note of that in the description in a timely manner, but it is often that I must wait until the weekend to work on this site.

The pictures and descriptions are to give you an idea what is available and the approximate price for a similar display with a particular type of focal point relic. A pictured display may or may not be available, but I will generally make several similar displays at a time using similar relics, if I have the relics.

If a picture is not linked to a display, please email me and I will send it to you by email. I have not had time to scan every item yet.

CW001 - Special Requisition - This document measures approximately 8.5" x 14" and is in superb condition. It is a special requisition for clothing for Company F of the 81st Illinois Volunteers and is signed by the commanding officer, Capt. Samuel Campbell. The document comes with a lengthy 3 page history of the 81st, which fought at Vicksburg and other locations. 120 of their enlisted men were taken prisoner and sent to Andersonville. Of the 1,144 enlisted men mustered into the 81st, 54 were killed or died of wounds in battle, 287 died of disease, 274 resigned or were discharged and after the war, 529 mustered out of the service. The document is part printed, part handwritten in a very nice hand on both sides and is dated June 27, 1865 at Montgomery, Alabama.

CW104

CW104 - This is an very nice and rare display. The display is comprised of a leaf from the rare Confederate Bible, published by the Confederate States Bible Society and printed by Wood, Hanleiter Rice & Company of Atlanta, GA in 1862 and a leaf from the Union Bible, published by the American Bible Society in 1861. The Confederate leaf, valued at approximately $200, is pictured on the left and the Union on the right. These bibles were issued to soldiers during the Civil War. I have located less than 20 documented copies of the Confederate Bible and, to the best of my knowledge, there are less than 200 of leaves from this bible - 10 of which are in my collection and 100 of which were included in the Zinman American Bible Portfolio Collection which was published a decade ago. (NOTE: There are undoubtedly some copies gathering dust in attics or individual's bookshelves, but I have seen only one surface and that was in an auction in early 1999). I obtained my leaves from the biblical scholar, Franklin Maisel. These leaves were ones remaining after the completion of the American Bible Portfolio project. This is an opportunity to obtain one of American history's more rare bible leaves. The leaves are beautifully mounted on a backing of hand marbled paper in a double mat - hunter green and gold. A certificate of authenticity and a brief history accompanies this auction. (Herberts #1934). Additional info is available in Margaret Hills' "The English Bible in America" (American Bible Society, 1962) and Harold Willoughby's "Soldiers' Bibles through Three Centuries" (Univ of Chicago Press, 1944 p27-30). Insurance is included in the shipping price. Note that both leaves are from from the same chapter and verse. The pictured display contains  St. John and includes part of Chapter 11 and Chapter 12.
