A number of the vintage autographs in this area came from two old autograph books I acquired in the early 1960's and from a collection of many insignificant personal letters and documents an uncle of mine collected. Unfortunately my uncle clipped all of the signatures from the letters and documents. As I understand, sometime during WWII in Atlanta, Georgia, my uncle bought a collection of 5 bound volumes of Civil War era Harper's Weekly and several boxes of miscellaneous material. The collection of personal letters were in that miscellaneous material.

If the item is pictured on a descriptive album page, that item comes in a heavy poly holder punched to fit a standard 3-ring binder. The ones with a brief description at the bottom are 8.5" x 5.5" (like Pete Dawkins in Sports) and the ones that have lengthy descriptions (like Mario Andretti in Sports) are 8.5" x 11." If the autographed item is too large for the album page, it will be included in the poly holder. On ones that are affixed to the album page, they can be easily removed without damage.

Shipping and Insurance on any of these items is $6.00 per order domestic and $12.50 per order foreign.

$450.00 W. C. Fields (29 January 1880 – 25 December 1946) was an American comedian, actor and juggler. Fields created one of the great American comic personas of the first half of the 20th century—a misanthrope who teetered on the edge of buffoonery but never quite fell in, an egotist blind to his own failings, a charming drunk; and a man who hated children, dogs, and women, unless they were the wrong sort of women.

The characterization that he portrayed in films and radio was so strong it became generally identified with Fields himself. It was maintained by the movie-studio publicity departments at Fields's studios (Paramount and Universal) and further established by Robert Lewis Taylor's 1949 biography W.C. Fields, His Follies and Fortunes. Beginning in 1973, with the publication of Fields's letters, photos, and personal notes in grandson Ronald Fields's book W.C. Fields by Himself, it has been shown that Fields was married (and subsequently estranged from his wife), he financially supported their son and loved his grandchildren.

There was some truth to the misanthropic persona, however. Madge Evans, a friend and actress who appeared in several films during the 1930s, told a visitor in 1972 that Fields so deeply resented intrusions on his privacy by curious tourists walking up the driveway to his Los Angeles home that he would hide in the shrubs by his house and fire BB pellets at the trespassers' legs. Groucho Marx told a similar story, in his live album An Evening with Groucho.

Clark Gable (February 1, 1901–November 16, 1960) was an American actor, nicknamed "The King of Hollywood" in his heyday. In 1999, the American Film Institute named Gable seventh among the Greatest Male Stars of All Time.

Gable's most famous role was Rhett Butler in the 1939 Civil War epic film Gone with the Wind, in which he starred with Vivien Leigh. His performance earned him his third nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actor; he had won the award for It Happened One Night (1934) and was also nominated for Mutiny on the Bounty (1935). Later memorable performances were in Run Silent, Run Deep, a classic submarine war film, and his final film The Misfits (1961), which paired Gable with Marilyn Monroe in her last screen appearance.

In his long film career, Gable appeared opposite some of the best and most popular actresses of the time. Joan Crawford, who was his favorite actress to work with,[1] was partnered with Gable in eight films, Myrna Loy was with him seven times, and he was paired with Jean Harlow in six productions. He also starred with Lana Turner in four features, and with Norma Shearer in three. According to box-office charts, he was often named the second biggest box office draw in the mid-1930s, only behind Shirley Temple.

$125.00 Marlene Dietrich - (27 December 1901 – 6 May 1992) was a German-born American actress, singer and entertainer.

Dietrich remained popular throughout her long career by continually re-inventing herself. In 1920s Berlin, she acted on the stage and in silent films. Her performance as Lola-Lola in The Blue Angel, directed by Josef von Sternberg, brought her international fame and a contract with Paramount Pictures in the USA. Hollywood films such as Shanghai Express and Desire capitalized on her glamour and exoticism, cementing her stardom and making her one of the highest paid actresses of the era. Dietrich became a US citizen in 1939; during World War II, she was a high-profile frontline entertainer. Although she still made occasional films in the post-war years, Dietrich spent most of the 1950s to the 1970s touring the world as a successful show performer.

In 1999 the American Film Institute named Dietrich the ninth greatest female star of all time.

$225.00 Enrico Caruso (born Errico Caruso; February 25, 1873 – August 2, 1921) was an Italian opera singer. Caruso was also one of the most significant and renowned singers in any genre in both the 19th and 20th Centuries, and one of the most important pioneers of recorded music. Caruso's popular recordings and his extraordinary voice, known for its youthful beauty, mature power and unequalled richness of tone, made him perhaps the best-known operatic star of his era. Such was his influence on singing style, virtually all subsequent Italian and Spanish tenors (and many non-Mediterranean tenors, too) have been his heirs to a greater or lesser extent.

Caruso remains famous despite his predating the publicity machine that would aid later stars of opera.

$19.00 Jane Russell was a sex symbol, actress, model, and commediene from the early 1940's to about 1970. She was signed by Howard Hughes for his production of The Outlaw (1943) in 1941, the film that was to make Jane famous. The film wasn't a classic by any means, but was geared to show off Jane's ample physical assets. Although the film was made in 1941, it wasn't released until two years later and then only on a limited basis due to the way the film portrayed Jane's assets. It was hard for the flick to pass the censorship board. Finally, the film gained general release in 1946. The film was a smash at the box-office. This vintage photo is accompanied by a boldly hand-signed autograph card.

$75.00 The Odd Couple - This outstanding 8x10 glossy photo is hand signed by both Jack Klugman and Tony Randall. Photos signed by both are quite scarce and normally range in the $150-$200 area. FYI, Klugman's raspy voice was the result of having lost one of his vocal chords to cancer.
$49.00 Captain Edwin "Eddie" Ellsworth Peabody (February 19, 1902 - November 7, 1970) was an American musical entertainer. His career spanned five decades and he was perhaps the most famous plectrum/tenor (4 string) banjo player ever. He was also known professionally as "Little Eddie", "King of the Banjo", and "Happiness Boy". He started playing string instruments when he was 4 years old. He entered the Navy in 1914 and served on an S-14 submarine. It was there he truly mastered the banjo and his style of entertainment. He left active duty in 1921 but stayed in the reserves. He went back on active duty during WWII and rose to the rank of Captain. While there were a number of banjo players who were superior to Eddie in playing (such as Perry Bechtal), none had his entertainment talent. This outstanding vintage 8" x 10" photo is boldly inscribed and signed by Eddie.
$65.00 Sir Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. was a swashbuckling actor from 1916 to 1981. He died May 7, 2000. Fairbanks started in the silent film era and throughout his career, he appeared in some 100 movies.

Although celebrated as an actor, Fairbanks most enduring legacy was a well-kept secret for decades. At the onset of World War II, Fairbanks was commissioned a reserve officer in the United States Navy and assigned to Lord Mountbatten's Commando staff in England.

Having witnessed (and participated in) British training and cross-channel harassment operations emphasizing the military art of deception, Fairbanks attained a depth of understanding and appreciation of military deception then unheard of in the United States Navy. Lieutenant Fairbanks was subsequently transferred to Virginia Beach where he came under the command of Admiral H. Kent Hewitt, who was preparing U.S. Naval forces for the invasion of North Africa.

Fairbanks was able to convince Hewitt of the advantages of such a unit, and Admiral Hewitt soon took Fairbanks to Washington, D.C. to sell the idea to the Chief of Naval Operations, ADM Ernest King. Fairbanks succeeded and ADM King issued a secret letter on March 5, 1943 charging the Vice Chief of Naval Operations with the recruitment of 180 officers and 300 enlisted men for the Beach Jumper program.

The Beach Jumpers mission would simulate amphibious landings with a very limited force. Operating dozens of kilometers from the actual landing beaches and utilizing their deception equipment, the Beach Jumpers would lure the enemy into believing that theirs was the location of the amphibious beach landing, when in fact the actual amphibious landing would be conducted at another location. Even if the enemy was less than 100-percent convinced of the deception, the uncertainty created by the operations could conceivably delay enemy reinforcement of the actual landing area by several crucial hours.

United States Navy Beach Jumpers saw their initial action in Operation Husky, the invasion of Sicily. Throughout the remainder of the war, the Beach Jumpers conducted their hazardous, shallow-water operations throughout the Mediterranean.

For his planning the diversion-deception operations and his part in the amphibious assault on Southern France, Lieutenant Commander Fairbanks was awarded the United States Navy's Legion of Merit with bronze V (for valor), the Italian War Cross for Military Valor, the French Legion d'Honneur and the Croix de Guerre with Palm, and the British Distinguished Service Cross. Fairbanks was also awarded the Silver Star for valor displayed while serving on PT boats. In 1943, then Lt. Douglas Fairbanks Jr. played a significant founding role in the creation of the U.S. Navy Beach Jumpers. He was the recipient of the Silver Star, Distinguished Service Cross, Legion of Merit w/Bronze V, Croix de Guerre w/Palm, Legion D' Honneuer, Italian War Cross for Military Valor and many other citations during his military career

He was made an Honorary Knight Commander of the British Empire (KBE) in 1949.

As for the Beach Jumpers, they changed names several times in the decades following World War II, expanded their focus, and are currently known as the Navy Information Operations Command. Fairbanks stayed in the Naval Reserve after the war and ultimately retired a captain in 1954.

$19.00 Joseph Cotton - Cotton was active from 1937 to 1981. He appeared in more than 75 movies.

Cotten is considered one of the most underrated actors in Hollywood history. He was never nominated for an Academy Award, despite his immense body of work, including many films that are considered classics today. The only notable acting award Cotten received throughout his career was a Venice Film Festival Award for Best Actor for his work in Portrait of Jennie.

This very nice postcard size photo is boldly signed by Cotton in blue ink.

$29.00 Glenn Ford was active in the theatre from 1937 through 1991. He won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in the 1962 movie, Pocket Full of Miracles.

In 1958 he joined the U.S. Navy reserve and was commissioned as a Lt. Commander. He retired in the 1970's at the rank of Captain.

$69.00 James Francis “Jimmy” Durante #1 (February 10, 1893 – January 29, 1980) was an American singer, pianist, comedian and actor, whose distinctive gravel delivery, comic language butchery, jazz-influenced songs, and large nose — his frequent jokes about it included a frequent self-reference that became his nickname: "Schnozzola" — helped make him one of America's most familiar and popular personalities of the 1920s through the 1970s. During the Korean War, Durante and opera singer, Helen Trauble, came to Korea to entertain the troops and while in Taegu, he was a guest in my Father's "hooch." This is a very nice 8" x 10" black and white glossy Lowe's promotional photo from the 1948 movie, On An Island With You. It is boldly signed in blue ink by Durante.
$20.00 Jimmy Durante #2 - See details above. Great sig clipped from an early autograph book, but his pen started running as he signed his last name.
$10.00 John Uhler "Jack" Lemmon III (February 8, 1925 – June 27, 2001) was an American actor known principally for his comedic roles. He starred in over 60 films including Some Like It Hot, The Apartment, Days of Wine and Roses, Irma La Douce, The Odd Couple, The Out-of-Towners, Glengarry Glen Ross, The China Syndrome and JFK. He won two Oscars, an Emmy, and 6 Goden Globe awards. This is a very nice 8" x 10" Turner Pictures promotional photo for the play, A Life in the Theatre. It is boldly signed by Lemmon.
$29.00 Tony Randall (26 February 1920 – 17 May 2004) was an American comic and actor. He is perhaps best known for his work on television. His breakthrough role was as gym teacher Harvey Weskit in Mr. Peepers (1952–1955). He had the starring role in an NBC-TV special "The Secret of Freedom" which was filmed during the summer of 1959 in Mount Holly, New Jersey, and broadcast on the network during the fall of 1959 and again in early 1960.

After a long hiatus from the medium, he returned in 1970 as fussbudget Felix Unger in The Odd Couple, opposite Jack Klugman, a role he would keep for five years. The names of Unger's children on The Odd Couple were Edna and Leonard, named after Randall's sister and Randall himself. In 1974, Randall and Jack Klugman appeared in television spots endorsing a Yahtzee spinoff, Challenge Yahtzee. Although not identified as Felix and Oscar the TV spots were filmed on the same set as The Odd Couple.

Subsequently, he starred in The Tony Randall Show and Love, Sidney. In the TV movie that served as the show's pilot, Sidney Shorr was clearly written as a gay man, but his character's sexuality was made ambiguous when the series premiered. Disappointed by this turn of events and the series' lack of acceptance, Randall stayed away from television series.

Years later he was the host during the breaks for the October 30 - November 2, 1987 free preview of HBO's short lived premium channel Festival.

In September 1993, Randall and Jack Klugman reunited once again in the CBS-TV Movie The Odd Couple: Together Again reprising their roles as Felix Unger and Oscar Madison. The story began when, after Felix ruins plans for his daughter Edna's wedding, his wife Gloria throws him out the house for 11 days which left him no choice but to move back with Oscar and to help him recover, getting him back in shape after having throat cancer surgery having his vocal cord removed leaving his voice very raspy.

He and his third wife Dale Evans, his golden palomino Trigger, and his German Shepherd Dog, Bullet, were featured in over one hundred movies and The Roy Rogers Show. The show ran on radio for nine years before moving to television from 1951 through 1957. His productions usually featured two sidekicks, Pat Brady, (who drove a jeep called "Nellybelle"), and the crotchety Gabby Hayes. Roy's nickname was "King of the Cowboys". Dale's nickname was "Queen of the West." For many Americans (and non-Americans), he was the embodiment of the all-American hero. This fantastic vintage 8" x 10" photo is boldly signed by Roy across his legs. His signed photos normally range in the $150 to $250 area.
$49.00 George Campbell Scott (October 18, 1927 - September 22, 1999) was an American stage and film actor, director, and producer.
